I was so thrilled when I was given the opportunity to review Kumon Workbooks. I was even more thrilled when I discovered they had a line of workbooks designed for young children ages 2 and up! I have been trying to get my daughter interested in coloring but have been unsuccessful for the most part. That is until the Kumon First Steps Series showed up on my doorstep. The colorful and easy exercises in each First Steps workbook provide toddlers with the opportunity to become comfortable with the tools that are essential in every school– scissors, glue, pencils and crayons. These workbooks also teach the motor skills and problem-solving abilities that are a child’s First Steps towards success.
Like I said before I have had little success in getting my 16 month old to color. When I got out the Let's Color Workbook, she immediately sat in my lap and started to scribble! There
was no me holding her hand to show her what to do. She just did it. She loved the simple, colorful pictures located in the workbook. I was in complete shock. What is wonderful about these workbooks and one of the reasons that I think they work is that they encourage a dialogue between the parent and child about the picture they are working on while at the same time having fun. It allows the child to learn new vocabulary and also work on their fine motor skills. By talking about the picture they are working on, it allows the child to better understand what they are coloring. Once I told my daughter that the child in the picture was eating, she immediately started saying "num num" and pretending to eat herself. Besides the Let's Color Workbook, the First Steps Series includes Let's Sticker & Paste, Let's Fold, and Let's Cut Paper. All are great workbooks that will get your child ready for preschool and be better prepared for doing activities in a structured environment. Kumon Publishing also has a line of workbooks designed for Pre-K/K and grade school children.
